Finding things to do in Dothan

When I first moved to Dothan with my husband I spent a lot of time on the internet searching for interesting Facebook groups, looking at restaurants on Yelp and trying to find neat businesses or events.
I didn't have a lot of success.
To be fair, you can find out about a lot of events by following organizations and businesses on Facebook, but a lot of places in Dothan don’t maintain their web presence. So what is a transplant to do?
Get out in the community. Join at least one non-med school focused organization, volunteer, or otherwise try to meet people. If you have neighbors, especially neighbors who grew up here, talk to them. Ask about yearly events or their favorite places to go. People are very friendly here and can be a great resource. When you are driving around town, you may also want to check the marquee at Main St. and Oates periodically for news on big events around town.
Local publications are also a big deal. People really do read the newspaper and it publishes a list of local events. The local is another great publication – I usually pick up a copy at Dakota Coffee, but you can get them all over town. Dothan Magazine also has a nice list of upcoming events.
